6 Ways of Online Frauds and how to safeguard yourself
These days since COVID has started and made us sit at home by force or by choice we all are running our mind to keep us busy and do something different. Even Fraudsters are doing the same thing, they are every now and then coming up with new and innovative ways to fool people and take their money. Money which is once gone is difficult to recover. I am going to list some of the common ways by which someone can cheat you if you are not attentive and can lose your hard-earned money as well.
Never Trust Stranger– There was a case where the fraudster has listed fraud numbers on one of the NGO sites when someone reaches those numbers they ask to install one app which helps them see your machine. In this particular case, a lady wants to transfer some funds to NGO now when she was entering those details everything can be viewed by another person compromising the identity of the person. That lady ended up losing 50k. So the lesson is never shared your computer or mobile with unknown people and if you are not sure please seek help from someone who knows more about this.
Visit Authentic Websites – There was a fake insurance site link that was floating on google so when you search for insurance website fake profile comes first. A lot of people have taken insurance clicking on this fake website. Later when they didn’t received their policy they came to know that they are duped. Please check the website address and once you buy any such online policy call customer care to confirm if they have received the payment.
Fake SMS promising income tax refund–A bank employee received a link from the income tax department regarding an income tax refund he is eligible for. Once he clicks on that linked website open which asks for his details as to which bank he wants income tax refund to be credited in. He didn’t pay attention to the website as it looks very similar to the income tax website. In fact, he didn’t recall that he has already provided all his bank details while filling the refund form. Once he clicked on to submit all his bank account and card details were available with fraudster to use. Please be aware of what is happening around you as the income tax department refunds money directly in the bank and they never ask for such details.
KYC Update Link- One of the fraudsters sent a link to update the KYC. Usually, these messages will show the urgency like if you don’t do this now you will lose KYC and bank access and whatnot. We without checking the authenticity of these things click on such links and the end result is we are on the losing side. Do not click on the links sent in SMS. If you really want to complete your KYC which was an issue, in this case, please visit the branch or do it online by going on to the authentic website.
Easy Passwords – Never keep simple passwords that are easy to crack. I know its easy to say this but difficult to remember those. But understand this that usually most of the people keep passwords like 123456 which is so easy for a fraudster to guess and take funds out from your pocket without you being aware of. And by the time you come to know that it will be pretty late.
Lack of Awareness – Whatever options you are using for receiving or doing payment be aware of it fully. It should not happen that when you are supposed to receive money but by clicking on the wrong link you give money to a fraudster who intentionally gives the wrong link to you.
We have seen how fraudsters and scamseters use different ways and techniques to make money from your account. It’s your hard-earned money and you have to be careful when you are dealing with anyone online as people keep on looking for options to fool you and dupe you as well.
