The circumstances which we are facing are unexpected, which neither of us has dreamt off. A few months back we were thinking about what are our plans for 2020, what we will do and what not? And suddenly something like this comes up and we, totally unprepared, are thrown into it. And it’s not only we but also kids are stuck in these situations. Below are some of the things and activities that I’m suggesting to keep kids engaged during the lockdown.
Make Timetable – We should ask kids to make a time table for themselves. And when they are making the time table we have to emphasize that they have to keep some time for learning new things daily, be it anything but it should be of their interest. And ask them to keep everything in the time table even the smallest of things like eating food etc.
Involve them in House Chores – Make sure that you involve kids in one of the house chore activity. In this way, they will be able to understand how mom-dad does these activities and also will understand the importance of small things. Also, you need to appreciate them when they are doing it so that they will feel proud of it and in the future, they give importance to each and every work without thinking or looking at any work as downgraded.
Make Reading and Writing a Habit– Force your kids to read and write daily for even a few minutes. Once this habit is inculcated in them they will automatically understand the importance of learning. In this way, they are developing very important habit which will help them in the long run.
Play with them – As a parent, it has become very tough for each of us to give time to our kids. I know everyone must be thinking that it should be easy but all those who have started working from home and can easily relate to this where, when you go to the office you can spare more time which has started becoming more and more difficult due to work pressures, especially being at a home lot more work is expected then what it used to be. Having said all this, I would still suggest please take some time out and just be with them. Do what they want to do without asking questions, become like them. This might give a break to you which you also need and they will be happy too.
Create a To-Do list – Ask your kid to make a to-do list and tell them that be creative as much as you can. Once they create a list stick it in their room and ask them out of these what all you can do being at home. Help them in doing whatever is possible at home and when they are doing all these please don’t scold or shout at them when they are making house dirty as even they are facing same as you are and somehow trying to cope with this, though they are small to understand a lot of what is happening and why?
Reading Newspaper – If you are getting e-paper to ask them to read the newspaper daily. This will help them in understanding what is going around the world and ask them to keep a dictionary with them so whenever they are stuck they can check the meaning of it. In this way, their vocabulary will also improve.

Look for Broken Things in Home – Ask them to check which all things are broken in the house be it their toy or anything. Then ask them if you need to repair it, how will you go about it. Tell them to try repairing these things. If some of the things are repaired then your task is done, if not then also at-least they tried to do something which was constructive and you should be happy about it.
These are some of the things that I think can be done which not only will keep kids busy but also elated and engaged. People are hardly talking about these times when it is taking a toll on mental health as well on an individual. And this can happen with kids as well so we have to be double careful since if it is easy to take care of stuff when it is physical then mentally. I know these are tough times for all of us including our kids but trust me these times will pass and then we will think that why we have not utilized it to the fullest.
